What is butt welding pipe fitting?

A Butt Welding pipe fitting is a pipe fitting that has the connecting end for butt welding. The butt welding pipe fittings are used to connect with pipes or fittings with an exact size and same schedule butt welding ends. The butt welding pipe fittings include elbows, tees, reducers, caps, paddles, stub ends, crosses, and hot induction bends.

Butt welding is one type of welding joint method. In the butt welding process, the two parts of the material are put together parallel along an edge in one line. Butt welding joints could be done by a large machine continuously or a portable welding machine operated by a welder. Butt welding joint is an economical and reliable method of joining materials without any additional components.

Buttweld fittings are most commonly used in the piping systems of industrial, commercial, and residential applications. They connect pipes and join them to other components like valves, pumps, and flanges. Buttweld fittings are available in various sizes, shapes, and materials and are often used to create custom piping systems. Linkedin

Types of Buttweld Pipe Fittings

Seamless Buttweld Pipe Fittings

Seamless buttweld pipe fittings are manufactured from seamless pipes and tube by hot or cold extrusion, forming and machining process. Most of the seamless buttweld pipe fittings in standard sizes and grades are available ex-stock for immediate supply to our customers.

Welded Buttweld Pipe Fittings

Seam welded buttweld fittings are produced from hot rolled stainless steel pipes. As per customer requirements, we can also manufacture and offer butt weld fittings manufactured from hot rolled plates, formed into half shells or segments and then welded on the seams.

The long radius elbow refers to the outer diameter of the tube whose radius of curvature is equal to 1.5 times, that is, R = 1.5D. A short radius elbow means that its radius of curvature is equal to the outer diameter of the tube, ie R = D. The center to face distance of a long radius pipe elbow is always 1.5 times the nominal pipe size, whereas, for a short radius pipe elbow, the center to face distance is equal to the nominal pipe size.
Butt weld elbows are attached to pipes using the butt welding technique, which involves welding the fitting directly to the end of the pipe.
Material grades (carbon, high-yield carbon, low-alloy, stainless, duplex, and nickel alloys) and dimensions (2 to 24 inches in seamless execution and welded for larger pipe sizes). We customized these fittings at low and market-leading prices per the client's requirement, with the best quality and zero proportions errors. Our experts use the most up-to-date modern technology, machinery, equipment, and methods for the buttweld fittings manufacturing process.
Butt weld elbows find applications in various industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, and power generation where precise control and direction of fluid flow are crucial.
The choice of the right butt weld elbow depends on factors such as the material compatibility, required degree of bend, and the specific requirements of the piping system. Consulting with a piping engineer or specialist is recommended for optimal selection.
  • Various turning options and easy to weld.

  • Butt weld saves more cost than Forged.

  • Allow thin thickness as SCH 10 or SCH 10S.

  • Compatible with different sizes from 1/4 inch to 24 inch and up to 72 inch.

  • Continuous metal structure increases the strength of the piping system.

A butt weld pipe fitting is made by the process of hot forming that includes bending and forming to shape. The starting material of butt weld fitting is a pipe that is cut to length, heated and molded into specific shapes by means of dyes. Heat treatment is also done to remove residual stresses and obtain desired mechanical properties.
ASME B16.9 (and MSS-SP 43) Buttweld fittings are employed for piping systems above 2 inches in diameter, whereas socket weld and threaded fittings are used for smaller-size pipes (ASME B16.11). These buttweld fittings are widespread across the globe and used in different industries and sectors for various uses and applications. These fittings change the pipeline pathway and reverse their direction.
The main difference between butt weld and socket weld is how the two pipes are connected. Butt welds are joined by welding two pieces of pipe together at their ends, while socket welds are connected by inserting one pipe into another and then welding the joint. Socket welds are used for smaller-diameter pipes and require less material than butt welds, making them cheaper and faster to install.
Buttweld fittings are generally classified as "welded" or "pressure" fittings. Welded fittings are welded on to the piping system where as pressure fitting uses National Buttweld Thread (NPT) to connect to the Buttweld. Pressure fittings are classified as 3000#, 6000# or 9000# (most common).
